Day 11&12 - Boston
On Saturday we drove from Acadia to Boston. We made it into Boston right around 3pm. Right after we got here, we decided to hop on the subway and go up to Cambridge. Washington's Headquarters is up there and we were trying to get to it before it closed. Unfortunately we got up there are 15 mins after they had closed. So we just spent some time walking around Cambridge. We saw Harvard Yard and read all about the statue of John Harvard. Don't ever touch the statue if you see it! We had dinner at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage...as seen as Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. They are famous for their burgers named after celebrities. I had the Tom Brady, which was cheddar cheese, guacamole, onion, tomato, and lettuce. Daniel had the Big Pappi, which was a double cheese burger with bacon and bbq sauce. We came back to the hotel to call it an early night, because we are starting to wear down. Plus I needed to do laundry and Daniel needed to do some homework.
When we got back to the hotel the dryer was broken. They only have one and it was broken. I almost had a major melt down, but after explaining to the nice guy why it is so important for me to do laundry (because i've been living out of a tent for 6 days) he got approval from management to dry my clothes, but I had to wash them first. Great...but someone had washed clothes and just left them there. After sitting there for 20 mins, I finally decided I could have mine washed and their's back in the washer before they ever came back. This might possibly be the nicest hotel staff ever...but I'm pretty sure they are ready to see me leave, I've only asked 100 questions since we checked in.
Yesterday, we walked the WHOLE Freedom Trail. It is 2.5 miles from Boston Common up to Bunker Hill. We were able to see quite a bit, but the only things owned by the NPS are the USS Constitution, Bunker Hill Monument, and the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial. Something to do with the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial was closed, but we were still able to get our stamp at Faneuil Hall. They were actual having church service at the Old North Church, so we just snapped a pic or two and left. But people were still trying to get into the church and one man kept sticking his head through the windows. On the recommendation of Sami Ottinger, we stopped at Mike's Pastry for a cannoli. Now I personally do usually care too much for cannoli, but oh my! They had every flavor of cannoli you could ever possibly dream of. I had amaretto and Daniel had chocolate chip.
After the Freedom Trail we went back up to Cambridge to see Washington's Headquarters, and finally got our stamp. We walked a ways down Newbury St. yesterday to see what shops they had. And we ended the night with dinner at the Union Oyster House. It is the oldest restaurant in the country and only has ever had 3 owners.
I am excited to go to Philly and I really excited about going to the Outer Banks, but I am starting to miss home. Even though I don't have one, I am ready to be back.
