DFT24 - Days 8 and 9
Saturday Night we stayed at a KOA in Flagstaff. I’ve always been a fan of KOA’s because they have showers and have things for the girls to do. And because we normally tent camp and that occasionally we could switch to a cabin if we decided too. But recently the ones we have stayed in have been very meh….I honestly think they are trying to squeeze too many people into each location and as a result they can’t keep up with the cleaning of the bathrooms and facilities but that’s not the point of todays post….
Sunday morning after leaving the KOA we headed for Sedona. After coffee where the girls shared a cinnamon roll….
Our first stop was the Red Rocks visitors center and then we decided to hike around Bell Rock. The scenery was beautiful but there were a lot of people on the beginning of the trail.
After ice cream we headed to another hike that I was pretty excited about. It was called Birthing Cave and it is said to have been where Hopi women went before they gave birth to their babies. However we got about a 0.5 miles down the trail and it started thundering. And we decided to turn around. We did drive down to Montazuma Castle National Monument and that was really cool to see.
On our drive back to the campground it started storming. It had been 103 degrees and even though they don’t have the humidity that we have - 103 is still hot. But when it stormed it dropped all the way down to 63. The girls and I slept in pants.
The scenery in Sedona is beautiful. But the town itself is like a bougie Gatlinburg. I think I prefer Flagstaff to Sedona.
The next day we decided to stay in the Flagstaff area. We found a pretty easy hike called Sandy’s Canyon. And after the hike we went to Lowell Observatory. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t very cooperative. So we didn’t get to look through any of the telescopes to see anything. But Daniel and EG did take the Lowell Tour to learn about the history and the discovery of Pluto…which Daniel and I both agree is still a planet 😉
After Lowell we had lunch at a park for the girls to play a bit. Then we got a coffee and an Italian soda from Matador coffee shop and drove up to the Arizona Snow Bowl hoping C would doze off.
For dinner we checked out Mother Road Brewing Co. but again service in downtown Flagstaff is not very good and they didn’t have the game on. We were able to listen to the last three innings and heard the final strike called by John Wilkerson! I also pulled up YouTube TV so I could watch some of the celebration!
It’s rained quite a bit and apparently more than usual for the area at this time of year. When we got back to the campsite our site was basically sitting in a puddle of water- Thank Goodness for the roof top tent. But everything we had left at the site including our chairs were soaked 🤦🏻♀️
