DFT24 - Day 3

Settle a family debate…what constitutes marking a state off your list? Some believe that you must do something in that state significant….not necessarily spend the night but go see a sight or have a meal (and that person is the official keeper of the lists for the girls). So for example we stopped in Texas had dinner and saw something fun. So both the girls can officially say they have been to Texas. Others in the family believe it counts if you just pass through the state. In 2016 on our big trip we passed through Idaho…we only stopped for gas, so I believe that I still have not visited Idaho. So EG would like for you to leave a thumbs up if you believe that you have to do something significant for it to count or a heart if you believe that just passing through counts.

Now on to the rest of the story…..We started Sunday by visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial. It was very somber. But I was surprised by how many people were there early on a Sunday morning.  Daniel and I talked about our different memories of it. And honestly other than it happening I don’t remember much of the details because I was 9. He was in middle school and remembers way more than I do.

Each chair represents someone who passed in the bombing. And they are arranged based off the location of that individual.

This reflecting pool is where the road was that the truck was parked on.  The third pine tree in the picture is the approximate location of where the truck was parked.

This is called Children’s Plaza. You can see the art work that was painted by kids in the area. Now they have chalk for visiting kids to leave their own artwork.

Then we drove across Oklahoma to Washita Battlefield.  It was a nice NPS site but you definitely have to want to go there to see it.  It was off the beaten path.  The nature trail was nice and very informative but it was 99 degrees and HOT!

After the battlefield we started the drive across Texas. Once we got close to Amarillo we started looking for a place to eat. And considering it was Sunday evening and Father’s Day there didn’t seem to be much open. But the one thing we keep seeing online that was a must try “experience” was the The Big Texan Ranch - home of the Free 72 oz Steak Eating Contest. So we thought “When in Texas”….and we gave it a try. We were pleasantly surprised by it.  It wasn’t the best steak ever but it defiantly wasn’t the worst.  The atmosphere was fun.  We had two cowboys playing music come up to the table and ask to play us a song.  EG requested Dolly first and he said he loved her but he didn’t play her. So her second request was Rocky Top.  He wasn’t thrilled but he played it for her and then told her she ruined his night 😂. But he did give her a guitar pick when he was finished and she thought that was super cool.

After dinner I insisted that we stop at Cadillac Ranch.  There was all kinds of spray paint when you arrived so you could create your own art.  But when you got close they were surrounded by huge puddles of water that you had to wade through to get to the cars. And I refused to do that.  I’m happy we stopped but probably wouldn’t ever stop again.

We finished the night watching the sunset and listening to the Vols win! And Finally made it to New Mexico.

This is a random picture of a coffee soda that I bought before we left Memphis. I finally drank it Sunday morning and it was SOOOO GOOD! If anyone is in Memphis headed to East TN you could bring me a four pack 😉
