DFT21 Days 7 and 8
We are currently in Custer State Park. We arrived Wednesday for our stay at the State Game Lodge. The lodge itself is historic and use to be used at the Summer White House for Coolidge and Eisenhower. But specifically for Coolidge. We have a cute room in one of the lodge wings that have been added on. Our room faces the parking lot and as we left for Breakfast yesterday we saw a BUFFALO just hanging out in the parking lot!
On Wednesday we started at the visitor's center which is really nice...so nice the Custer State Park Video is narrated by Kevin Costner. But it is very interactive and has lots of things to look at. Then we drove up to Sylvan Lake. The drive up is fantastic and very scenic. You go through a two tunnels one specifically called the needle eye tunnel. At Sylvan Lake we ate our PB and J's for lunch and walked the trail around the lake. EG's favorite part was getting to put her feet in the water!
We went back to the lodge to check in and get a dinner reservation for the restaurant at the lodge. We decided to dress up a little for our dinner. It was a decent meal. The flavors of things were good but the service was terrible. She never refilled our drinks, forgot to bring our salads and asked if we even still wanted them when she brought our food, and lastly she didn't even offer us "SSERRT" just brought the check and laid it down. But breakfast there Thursday morning was nice and a much better experience.
After dinner we drove the Wildlife Loop. We saw Deer, Elk, Pronghorn, Prairie Dogs, Burrows, and got caught in two Buffalo Jams!
Thursday morning we started with another drive around the Wildlife Loop. This time we didn't see as many buffalo but we did get to see the Burrows up close and personal. EG even got to pet one (Which is okay and it is actually encouraged to feed them). Also, we drove up to the Mt. Coolidge Fire Tower. Then we hiked to Cathedral Spires and saw a Mountain Goat! After our hike EG was finally able to Swim in a Lake and she had the best time!
We drove into Custer, SD for dinner to a place that had been highly recommended called the Burger and Bun Co. You could either get beef or buffalo for all your burgers. Everything is handmade in the store and they have homemade shakes for "SSERRT".
