DFT16 - Redwoods

On Saturday Morning we started by driving from our campsite back down to Muir Woods.  We had read that the park opened at 8 but the visitors center and gift shop didn't open until 9, so we thought we would beat the crowd.  When we firsts arrived the very first parking lot was already full, but we got in and were able to walk around without too many people.  We waited for the gift shop to open at 9 and by that time, it was a complete madhouse in there.  The lady at the checkout said it was crazy town there all the time, especially on weekends.  It was kinda insane how busy it was.

From there we drove to Point Reyes National Seashore to see the Lighthouse.  It was not as far up the coast as we thought and still really considered in the San Francisco Area.  While there we were able to see the lighthouse and walk down the 300 steps to it, as well as walk back up them.  But the best part for driving to the Elephant Seal overlook.  I got to see an entire beach of Elephant Seals just hanging out!

After leaving Point Reyes we realized we weren't that far from the super cute town outside our camp site, so we drove back over there had a late lunch and I got to look around in some of the shops.  Once we left Peteluma, it was still a 4 to 5 hour drive to the Redwoods.  We had planned on driving up Hwy 1, but that was going to take much longer and just decided to drive up the freeway, which ended up being pretty scenic itself.  We made it to our campsite in the Redwoods about 9:30 that night.

Sunday morning we got up to spend the day in the Redwoods.  Redwoods is interesting because its basically several state parks put together to make up the National Park.  It is very big and pretty spread out.  We were staying on the North Side and the most visited part is in the South, which was an hours drive from us.  As we drove South we stopped to hike on this Trail called Fern Canyon.  It literally was a canyon covered in ferns.  It was really cool!  We saw a ton of Elk in the Elk Viewing Area.  While we were there the Redwoods were having a celebration for the Park Centennial. I kept trying to get Daniel to go, but he never would.  Turns out John Muir's grandson was there has one of the guest storytellers.  We also hike the Lady Bird Grove Trail and took a Scenic Drive to what is called Stout Grove to hike a short trail there.  All our hikes on Sunday were pretty short, we just really weren't feeling it.  Plus the weather is super crazy in the Redwoods. Its really cool and foggy by the coast, but when you move 10 miles inland it gets hot and clear pretty fast.  We made it back to our campsite by 8 pm Sunday...which is the earliest we have been back this whole trip and decided to have a campfire for the first time!
