DFT19 - Eastern Maine

After leaving Baxter State Park we drove to Eastern Maine, specifically we wanted to go to St. Croix National Historic Site and West Quoddy Head Lighthouse - the eastern most point in the United States.  But we found some other neat things along the way.

First driving to St. Croix you pass through Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.  We didn't have time to stop but just passing by I was able to spot a Bald Eagle.  I'm sure it would be full of all kinds of amazing wildlife.

To be a very small National Historic Site St. Croix is really nice and very well maintained.  The Rangers there are very nice and are willing to talk to you and answer any questions you have.  Unfortunately you no longer able to actually go to the island, but they have a small walking path with lots of interpretive signs and statues.  Also because it was low tide we were able to go down and walk on the beach some.

When choosing places to stay it was hard to find good accommodations close to St. Croix.  I found a motel(the only one) in Calais.  But upon further investigation we found out someone had been murdered there.  So Daniel found a motel call the Redclyffe Shore Inn.  It was suppose to be in a historic house, so you know that was right up his alley.  Well it was quite the interesting experience.  The only great thing I can say about it is that it was clean.  The door barley opened because the metal was bent on the bottom.  When we first got there we hadn't showered in about 36 hours because we had been at Baxter and when I went to get in the shower I we didn't have any hot water.  Finally they figured out that the maid had turned it off.  But it took about an hour for it to warm up to get enough luke warm water for all of us to bathe.

The innkeeper recommended a restaurant in Eastport called The Eastport Chowder House.  The food was okay but the service was terrible.  I don't even want to go in to how bad it was.  She did only charge us for one dessert though since we had been there so long.  However the town of Eastport was really neat and cool to explore.  It is the Eastern Most City in the US.  Also at one time it was the Sardine Capital of the World and at one point in time Raye's Mustard in Eastport, was the leading mustard producer for the entire Eastern Seaboard, was invented there to help preserve the Sardines.

We also drove through the small town of Lubec, Maine which is the Eastern Most Town in the US.  From it you can drive across the Bridge into Canada and see Dudley Island.

The last thing we did on the Eastern Coast of Main was visit West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the Eastern Most Point in the US.

During all these adventures on the east coast of Maine, we had terrible cell phones service.  So Mom and Daniel turned on their roaming.  Which apparently started picking up Canadian Service.  That we didn't know was Canadian Service until we got text messages telling us we had $100 roaming charge fee for using International Cell Phone Service.  Needless to say I got elected to call AT&T and explain that we were not in Canada but still in the US.  Apparently Alex is reversing the charges and he blocked all our phones from even picking up on Canadian Service.  So we shall see....
