DFT18 - Glenwood Springs, CO
We tried to keep driving to 3 hours or less a day, so EG wouldn't have to ride for long periods of time. No more driving 36 straight hours :) So instead of driving straight from Black Canyon to Rocky Mt. we decided to stop in Glenwood Springs, CO.
Daniel has driven by Glenwood Springs several times on his way out to Utah. And it looks like a really neat town. Now if you want my honest opinion I think the reason Daniel really wanted to stay in Glenwood Springs, is because of Hotel Colorado. Which Teddy Roosevelt stayed at twice when he came to Colorado bear hunting. And well Teddy is Daniel's favorite president and all.
Most of the hotels are on the opposite side of the interstate from downtown, but they have a really neat pedestrian bridge to take you right into downtown. We had lunch at the Blue Bird Cafe, and watched a local artist hang out some of her beautiful work to display in the cafe. And just walked around town looking in all the shops. After a couple hours we went back to the hotel so EG could nap and to take showers since we hadn't had one since Saturday night.
For dinner I had found a restaurant with excellent reviews called The Colorado Ranch House. The food was really good but the service was terrible.
After dinner we met a couple sitting on the lawn of the hotel. We struck up conversation about the current heat wave in Colorado. They mentioned that Denver was suppose to have record high temps and I said "Oh great we will be there in about five days." And the man said in five days we will be at a Rockies Game. Then we realized that is the same day we are going to the Rockies game. So we all started talking, said we would have to at least look for each other. Daniel mentioned that we rented an Airbnb for Denver, and he was a little skeptical. We told them the address and it turns out the house we rented, was the first house the lady ever owned! Isn't it wild how we have met and had some connection with all these different people on our trip??
We did go swimming in the largest natural hot spring pool in the state of Colorado. EG loved it!
The next morning we had breakfast in the hotel and it was really good. Then we did a little more shopping around town and found a store that sold work of local artists. We were able to meet and purchase art that we saw the day before in the cafe. We had lunch at Smoke Modern BBQ...and the service there made up for the terrible service from the night before. I ate Burnt End Mac and Cheese that was fab!
After lunch we started our drive to Rocky Mountain National Park... and well the next blog post is quite interesting!
